The Midwest Premiere

DURANGO

By Julia Cho   bio

Directed by Carlos Murillo   bio

To the outside world, the Lee boys look like the perfect Korean American sons: Isaac plans to be a doctor and his younger brother, Jimmy, is a champion swimmer with a bright future. But when their widowed father, Boo-Seng, decides to take them on a road trip to Durango, Colorado, all three find themselves grappling with old memories and unhealed wounds. As tempers flare and secrets break open, the difference between who they are and who they’ve pretended to be threatens to tear the family apart. 105 minutes with no intermission.

‘Durango’ manages to deftly evoke a family where no male really has the words to reach another male…Cho is a compassionate and interesting young writer able to see the world from more than one side…grounded in familial truth.
- Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

a road trip with a difference … has the ring of truth… echoes of both ‘Death of a Salesman’ and ‘Leaving Iowa’…directed with an appealing minimalism...at once universal and specific.
- Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times

‘Durango’ is quietly devastating…Carlos Murillo’s staging is fittingly both stark and tender…Cho’s work feels so distinctly American…deft, penetrating scenes…understated but detailed performances…tense moments build to an emotionally shattering climax.
- Zac Thompson, Chicago Reader

An automobile journey of intimate scenes…elegantly simple in presentation…truthfully written and exceptionally well performed…Director Carlos Murillo delves deep…full of theatrical surprises and painterly beauties.

-Jonathan Abarbanel, Windy City Times

One of the Top Ten Plays of 2006
- Entertainment Weekly

Best of 2007 - L.A. Times
