THE MIDWEST PREMIERE
YOHEN
By Philip Kan Gotanda
Directed by Steve Scott

Featuring
Cheryl Hamada
as Sumi
Ernest Perry, Jr.

Through November 2, 2008

A divorced Japanese woman and an African-American GI meet in post-World War II Japan and fall in love. After decades of struggle, they have found an accepting Los Angeles suburb to call home--but their peaceful world is changing. More than a study of clashing cultures, Yohen is the poetic, resonant story of two partners who discover that intimate relationships change with environments--and love, however time-tested, is never constant.

Middle East America Award Announced
Adriana Sevan Receives Distinguished Playwright Award;
Special Jury Prizes to Leila Buck and Sinan Unel

Distinguished Playwright Adriana Sevan
Silk Road Theatre Project has partnered with San Francisco's Golden Thread Productions and New York City's Lark Play Development Center to create Middle East America, a commissioning program for playwrights of Middle Eastern American heritage. Last week the partnering organizations announced the selection of Adriana Sevan as the inaugural recipient of the award, with additional Special Jury Prizes awarded to Leila Buck and Sinan Unel. The first of its kind, this prize provides a $10,000 commission for Sevan to write a new play, intensive developmental support from the Lark, staged readings and possible productions at Golden Thread and Silk Road, and travel funds to be present at all stages of the process.

Sevan is an American artist of Armenian, Dominican, and
Basque ancestry. About the award, Adriana says, "What a blessing to have a trinity of theatres so committed to the heart of my unwritten play, eager to share their wisdom and resources, provide a nurturing community, and help the seeds of my story to grow." About Sevan's proposed new work, the Artistic Director of Silk Road Theatre Project Jamil Khoury says, "This exciting first commission promises to enrich the cannon of American theatre and our understanding of Middle Eastern Americans. Adriana plans to conduct research exploring themes of family, atrocity, migration, and memory, including the untold stories of the Turkish Schindlers who helped Armenians survive their Ottoman tormentors. The play is inspired by Adriana's grandparents who survived the Armenian genocide before fleeing to the shores of New England."

William El-Gardi in Yasser
October 28 to November 8 at Chopin Theatre
Yasser is a young, idealistic Palestinian actor living in Europe. Before going onstage to play Shylock, the archetypal Jew in The Merchant of Venice, he's torn between his Palestinian identity and the role. He'd really rather play Arafat or Yitzhak Rabin, as he did as a young boy in Palestine. He also has been robbed of all his props to perform onstage and dumped by his girlfriend. It's an hour before curtain but where is his nose? Maneuvering through the roles, he discovers that the Arab understands Shylock better than anyone else: can anyone really cut a pound of flesh without spilling blood?
