Milestone Makers Award

ASIAN AMERICAN INSTITUTE  HONORS  SILK ROAD THEATRE PROJECT


On Thursday, April 26, 2007, the Asian American Institute presented its Milestone Makers Award to Silk Road Theatre Project, in recognition of Silk Road’s contributions to the Asian American community and to Asian American arts. Milestone Makers are distinguished for combating stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans, and for advancing the overall profile of Asian Pacific communities. The award was presented to company co-founders Malik Gillaniand Jamil Khoury at the Asian American Institute’s 15th Anniversary Gala Benefit held at the Mid-America Club.

We at Silk Road Theatre Project are honored and greatly humbled to be the recipients of this prestigious award. The Milestone Makers Award represents a milestone both in our company’s history and in our mission of showcasing playwrights of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean backgrounds.

 

We applaud the Asian American Institute for celebrating the important contributions of artists and theatre professionals within our diverse communities.

 

About the Asian American Institute

The Asian American Institute was established in 1992 as a pan-Asian not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. Its mission is to empower the Asian American community through advocacy, utilizing research, education, and coalition building. Specifically, the Institute works to:

  • improve cooperation and mutual understanding by bringing ethnic Asian American communities together
  • raise the visibility of the Asian American community and spotlight its concerns so that elected officials, policy makers and the general public will understand
  • gather and disseminate data about Asian American communities

“Marketing to Asians” ProgramFeatures Executive Director Gillani

 

On Tuesday, April 24, Executive Director Malik Gillani spoke at Campbell & Company about the rewards and challenges of marketing to Chicago’s Asian American and Asian communities. Featured with Gillani was Irene Cualoping of ENERI Communications. “Marketing to Asians” attracted professionals from both the not-for-profit and commercial sectors, and was tailored primarily for arts organizations.
